Wooden Nickels on the Internet
|
Sambo's Restaurants used Wooden Nickels as a token for coffee. Their slogan was:
'What This Country Needs is a Good 10cent Cup of Coffee, Sambo's Has It.'
The first Sambo Pancake house opened in June of 1957 in Santa Barbara, California. In 1960
they opened six other pancake houses.
By 1964 there were 32 Sambo's and by 1972 there were over 200
Sambo's Restaurants in cities all over the U.S. used these Coffee Tokens.
Sambo's Wooden Nickels are some of the most sought afer by collectors.
In 1976, Sambo's changed their Wooden Nickel in honor of the U.S. Bicentennial.
The picture below shows one of the original printing plate molds (it is filled with white ink, so that it will show),
an original printing plate (the city names were glued on the main plate), and a print from the printing plate.
Information about Sambo's Wooden Nickels was extracted from " A check List For Sambo Coffee Chips" by Virginia Dennis and
an article in "Timber Lines" by Ruby Threlkeld
